CONTEXT

In 2002 the Zambian government declared primary education free, in accordance with the ambitious objectives to be achieved by 2030 (SDGs - Sustainable Development Goals).
Quality and accessible education is a key instrument to tackle challenges such as poverty, HIV and social injustice. In such context Community Schools contribute to achieve quality primary education as encouraged by the Universal Human Rights Declaration.
The first Community school was established in Zambia in 1982, in order to meet vulnerable children’s needs (poor, orphans, girls, and children of illiterate parents). Community schools differ from Government schools for being located mainly in rural or peri-urban areas as well as for being open to extremely poor students who cannot afford regular school fees. This model directly involves parents, who contribute to the management and the economic sustainability of the schools. They provide contributions in kind in exchange for payments of local teachers and basic infrastructure.
ACRA intends to fulfil the universal right to a fair and equal education, regardless of culture, origin and social status. The approach is highly participatory, with the engagement of a wide range of stakeholders, in order to promote a permanent dialogue among institutions and civil society.


 

OBJECTIVES

  • The Overall Objective of the proposed action is to contribute to achieve Universal Primary Education (UPE) in Zambia (MDG 2).
  • The Specific Objective of the proposed action aims to improve the provision of quality education services in 26 community schools in the Chipangali constituency, District of Chipata, Zambia, facilitating coordination and advocacy mechanisms at the district and province levels.

 


 

ACTIVITIES

 

  • Community level. Programme of capacity development directed to Parents teachers’ school committee, Teachers, Peer Educators and Students in collaboration with District Board Secretary (DEBS): training of staff in leadership and management to improve their participation in schools and optimize their intervention, adopting a crossing gender sensitive perspective.
  • District and province level. involvement of Community School Organizations (CSOs) working with Community Schools and DEBS: facilitation of the advocacy mechanisms and activities coordination, offering qualified opportunities of discussions and exchange of good practices and procedures.
  • Buildings and equipment. Definition and implementation of a Plan of infrastructural rehabilitation and construction, restoration and rehabilitation of schools and the provision of the needed educational equipment. WASH training (access to water, sanitation and hygiene) and drilling of boreholes in selected schools. Building and equipment of Teacher Resource Center in Kasenga.

                           


 

IMPACT

Target groups:

  • 4.356 students of the 26 target Community Schools
  • 104 teachers of 26 Community Schools (CSs)
  • 156 Peer Educators Members of Student Clubs of 26 primary CSs
  • 260 (10 from each school) members of Children Councils (CCs)
  • 104 Members of Parent Teachers Associations (PTAs) of 26 CSs
  • 14 CSOs-working-on-CSs in the Eastern Province.

Final beneficiaries of the action will be the local population of target villages (16.766 community members).


 

SUSTAINABILITY

 

The sustainability of the action is granted mainly through the capacity building of the various parties involved (teachers, parents, students). Such intervention aims to provide the necessary tools to give continuity to school activities after the project conclusion.
