An economically sustainable management of an aqueduct in Zanzibar
Specifically, the projects aims at allowing access to drinking water and basic sanitation to the rural population of nine villages in the Mfenesini area through a participatory approach and in the framework of a sustainable water and costs management policy.
The project foresees the involvement of women in activities of management and use of water resources and therefore has among its general objectives the one to contribute to women emancipation and to the strengthening of the decision-making power of women within the community.
Problems to solve
Zanzibar, as well as other smaller islands, is characterized by limited opportunities for diversification and economic growth. The main limits are obviously represented by the scarcity of land and human resources.
While a law on investment has recently spurred the arrival of foreign capital for some infrastructural works in areas with major tourism potential, many parts of the island are still ignored by public and private funds and there are still considerable difficulties in meeting the basic needs, including the access to drinking water, which is certainly a priority.
