Education and Agriculture in Guéra, Chad
The project is conceived on the idea that strengthening the link between the school - as a place for capacity-building - and agriculture - the main activity of the area - is at the base of the mending of a local brittle socio-economic fabric weakened by the frailty of institutions, frequent conflicts and difficult access to food.
The project aims at improving the quality and quantity of the basic education system in the region of Guéra. The creation of the APE (Associations Parents d’Eléves) and their involvement in school management is a sign of the renewal process that shall bring a general improvement of the living conditions of communities. In addition to the consolidation of school infrastructures, teacher training and provision of teaching materials, the project shall be integrated with an agricultural training course (creation of school gardens, reforestation, community-based productive activities) designed for the self-funding of schools.
Problems to solve
The structural weakness of the Chadian education system is due to multiple problems including: low public investments, lack of qualified personnel, insufficient and irregular duration of the school calendar - often incompatible with the constraints of the agricultural calendar - and lack of continuity in teachers’ payments. In this context, we should consider also the heavy commitment of children (especially girls) in water supply, which means covering long distances on foot in order to access the nearest well; in addition to the widespread poverty that prevents families to pay school fees.
