Ecuador: remittances for development.
The project is a co-development project that stems from a multicultural environment characterized by migration and the opportunity to make migrants the actors for the development of their native lands. The project focuses on the Ecuadorian community living in Italy and sets up networks with local development actions in the provinces of Azuay and Cañar in Ecuador.
In particular the project shall strengthen and enhance the transfer of migrant remittances and shall promote innovative ways to invest those resources in the construction and rehabilitation of water infrastructure projects.
Problems to solve-
Deficit of basic water services caused by the lack of efficient public economic resources and a poor technical training of the Juntas Administradoras de Agua Potable and Directorios de Riego, the bodies responsible for the management and maintenance of water services
-
Weak incidence of remittances in local development, in particular the ones used to improve the living conditions of rural populations
-
Weak propensity of migrant families in Ecuador and of migrants in Italy to refer to financial institutions or banks
-
Lack of organizational capacity of migrant associations in Italy, which have predominantly an informal nature and have difficulties in activating the dynamics of co-development
