16 October: World Food Day 2014

00696 festival coverOver the past ten years, the hunger in the world fell by about 100 million people. This is a fact and it is perhaps the demonstration of what can be done if governments, civil society, institutions and the private sector work together to meet this important goal. Nevertheless, there are still the 805 million people are unnourished, this happens particularly in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, where one in four people live daily food shortages. Today is the World Food Day 2014.

In Rome today is celebrated, for the 33rd year, the day that the United Nations have decided to dedicate to the fight to one of the plagues of the history of mankind: hunger and malnutrition. Each year the organization of the United Nations for Food and Agriculture (FAO) monitors and studies how the world produces and consumes food and what everyone can do to support the right to food, one of the fundamental human rights. This year, the attention of the FAO focused on family farming, the form of agriculture that is still the most common both in developed countries and in developing ones. The family farming is the prevalent form of agriculture but is threatened by the spread of industrial agriculture, a completely different model of production and consumption of food that most people know would be unsustainable in the long run.

According to the experts of the FAO, family farming is a resource for the future and does not even has to be discovered but simply to be valued. The small farmers of the world can contribute to the fight against hunger and poverty, to fight for food and nutrition security, to find a sustainable management of natural resources, and much more.

When you think of family farming you shouldn’t think about how a farm was 100 years ago, the idea of farm that we have from the stories of our grandparents or the movies in black and white. On the contrary, small farmers of the world are constantly changing and continually renewing the ancient country traditions, made of observation and experimentation. Small farmers contribute to the growth of the most valuable form of biodiversity for mankind: the food.
