A more sustainable city for the protection of the common goods of our territory
The project aims at protecting the common goods - water and land - of the municipality of Sesto San Giovanni (MI) with the promotion of sustainable lifestyles among various actors: families, schools, operators of the catering-industry, citizens and institutions. New tools of information, awareness and participation shall disseminate some good practices in the use of water for domestic purposes and in the use of land and public gardens in order to measure quantitatively and qualitatively the behavioral change towards a greater sustainability.

Problems to solve / Issue

In the province of Milan, two basic common goods like water and land are threatened by worrying phenomena: the high domestic consumption of potable water clash with the high population density of the area. Moreover, superficial groundwater are polluted and - despite the good quality of water distributed in the province of Milan - the spread consumption of mineral water resulting from misinformation and ingrained habits (Italy is the third country in the world for per capita consumption of that product) produce thousands of tons of plastic waste and generate more pollution. On the other hand there is a growing use of land and a lack of attention to the green areas. There are many associations and institutions that promote more sustainable lifestyles but they never worked together in order to have a profound effect on citizenship. A city such as Sesto San Giovanni - that was already involved in our “Common Good” local campaign - is a privileged laboratory in which to begin new educational programs.

Results to achieve

  • Measurement of the reduction of environmental impacts caused by the widespread use of tap water
  • Introductions - by the institutions (local governments and schools) - of plants that encourage the proper use of water resources
  • Start-up of participatory programs for the sustainable management of the public spaces in the city
