In 2009 ACRA established the Water User Association (WUA) in Tanzania . WUA is a community social enterprise supplying water to 16 villages and serving 50,000 people.
To date, the organisation is ALMOST economically sustainable. It has set up a fund to pay for extraordinary maintenance expenses expected over the next 10 years, saving money each year from the ordinary operations (the tariffs applied to run the service).
The WUA also owns 173 acres of land planted with pine trees, which will provide a huge capital in 15–20 years’ time.
About 90% of customers pay the monthly tariffs.
