ACRA was born in Italy 40 years ago - in May 1968 - thanks to a group of friends, driven by the desire to promote a secular commitment to sustainable development in developing countries across the world. Its activity began in the village of Borom - in southern Chad - with an integrated rural development project that will last 18 years. In Italy, ACRA members were mostly members of support groups, which collected funds for the project. The groups, organized in various cities (Milan, Varese, Lecco, Turin, etc.) provided the economic resources, gave logistical support and representation and created a cultural background of awareness raising in the area. Since then, ACRA works alongside the populations of developing countries across the world trying to give answers to their basic needs for survival and self-development. At the same time ACRA has never ceased to be the spokesperson - on the Italian territory - of the instances of its local partners promoting a culture of peace, dialogue and intercultural exchange through awareness campaigns aimed at school students, citizens and institutions. The commitment of ACRA in Italy is powered by a triple objective: informing and sensitizing people, involving the younger generations, training and capacity building in order to generate change and building bridges between North and South through the channels of decentralized cooperation.
