CONTEXT

Mozambique, as other African countries, has to face the lack of sanitation that could guarantee appropriate sanitary conditions to the population. This project is characterized by a different approach on this particular problem: the aim is to provide slums with appropriate sanitation services, not only ditribuiting latrines to families, but also making a good use of the social entrepreneurs’ potential to the development of the country. The action connects supply and demand identifying on the one hand a fair price that allows poor people to buy toilettes, on the other hand stimulating the dissemination of small local businesses (for instance:activities of waste disposal, small enterprises that work with micro-finance. etc.)
The last challenge is to built, together with Italian and Mozambiquan Universities, biodigesters to verify on the field which could be the best solutions to produce biogas and fertilizers.

SUSTAINABILITY

The identified market solutions and the social enterprises supported as country economy incubator are levers on which financial sustainability lean, they are the heart of the project. Business models promoted by the Sani Loja social enterprise – tanks to a system of affordable rates for poorer families – guarantee the profitability of the enterprise itself and a constant market demand. Furthermore, the social enterprise will accompany the enterpreneurs during the process of access to credit, in the creation of lasting relationships whith the local financial institutions and will strenghten their technical and managerial skills in the perspective of a long term sustainability. Being part of the framework of national and regional programs established by the government of Mozambique, the project will have a constant and lasting dialogue with local institutions. Moreover, as an action of ecological sanitation, in this project all the environmental aspects are important; among others, the experimental production of biogas and fertilizers through the treatment of faeces.
