Natural resources and ecological integrity of ecosystems, a clean environment not contaminated by unhealthy or toxic substances are an aesthetic and spiritual absolute value and at the same time represent the foundations of life.

Increasingly clear is the role played by ecosystems in terms of services they render to human communities: supply of goods (e.g. water, meat, fruits, timber and medicines,) the regulation of processes such as floods and droughts, support to other services that sustain life (water purification, decomposition of organic matter and nutrient cycling and soil formation), the spiritual comfort, religious and aesthetic benefits of recreation and tourism.

More than ever, the interventions for rural development must address environmental and natural resources in an integrated and responsible way, because everything is connected and interdependent.
