As a human right recognized by the United Nations, nutrition may and should be ensured equally to all persons in all parts of the planet. Unfortunately - even today - for more than one billion people worldwide suffering from hunger and malnutrition (most of whom living in rural areas of the developing countries) this goal is a utopia. In its most extreme manifestations - hunger and malnutrition - food insecurity is both a cause and consequence of absolute poverty.

Economic, environmental, political and socio-cultural factors help to generate food insecurity. As a multidimensional phenomenon, food security is the result of coherent policies, whose effective implementation is a responsibility of international institutions and governments, but also of local authorities, civil society organizations, businesses and individuals.
