Senegal, Regioni di Dakar, Kaolack, Thiès, Fatick, Ziguinchor, Tambacounda, Diourbel, Louga e Saint Louis.

From November 1, 2012 to October 31, 2013

This project is included in the program known as Fondazioni4Africa, implemented jointly by 4 bank foundations, by some Italian NGOs and by some associations of migrants.
In Senegal ACRA is responsible for implementing the component of the program connected to microfinance, intended as a tool to relieve poverty and improve the socioeconomic conditions of the population, especially the rural population. Though of different social-economic characteristics, the interested regions share a limited access to credit and formal financial services. The impossibility to access financial services prevents men and women from playing an active role in the local economy, from having an income and a sufficient power of spending to be socially recognized, to set up a business activity and therefore, more generally, fuelling conditions of poverty. The intervention is mainly directed at activities of institutional, organizational and technical consolidation, of URMECS (Union Rural des Mutuelles d'épargne et de Crédit du Sénégal) and its members, technical capacity building of the microfinance structures and identification of ad hoc products coherent with the specific income generating activities.

  • Provide technical support to microfinance structures and identify ad hoc products coherent with the specific income generating activities supported through the project.

  • Training and monitoring of the three Savings and Credit Bank Unions (URMECS, MEC DELTA and UFM) and studies on the creation of appropriate financial products for the production chains.
  • Communication activities (radio, press, brochures, panels at the banks), marketing and exchange meetings.
  • Institutional and management strengthening, computerization of the three unions and the basic branches, strengthening of security and identification of specific microfinance products and agricultural insurance.
  • Establishment of a partnership between the three unions and Pamecas: GIE VA.RE.MI. (Valorisation of Remittances from Migrants),a governance structure for the promotion, valorisation and channelling of remittances from Senegalese migrants.

Direct beneficiaries:
33,056 members (of whom 40% are women) of the 35 Savings and Credit Banks involved in the three unions.

ACRA has contributed to the foundation of the URMECS banks. Thanks to the Foundations4Africa the union has grown, improving its internal processes, broadening their client base and gradually becoming a microfinance institution which is increasingly recognized at national level. URMECS is successfully following an internal consolidation process and plans reaching full sustainability by 2014.
