a community-based social enterprise providing hydroelectric energy

In 2009, ACRA established LUMAMA, a community-based social enterprise generating and distributing hydroelectric energy to around 20,000 people in 7 villages in Tanzania’s Njombe region.

The area had no electricity before LUMAMA was set up. LUMAMA has the hallmark and the vocation of a community social enterprise, whose members – who are also customers – successfully run the organisation.

Today, LUMAMA is one of the country’s most exemplary social enterprises in the micro-grid sector for its economic-sustainability model, its strong local roots, and its social impact in an extremely marginal area.

In 2014 Acra withdrew from the enterprise and currently the Social Enterprise is managed by a local committee.
