icona acqua bambineA sustainable sanitation chain: market solutions as an answer to problems concerning the access to sanitation in Maputo province, Mozambique

Maputo Province, Moamba and Marracuene Districts, Bairros Zimpeto place e Magoanine A, B e C of urban district n. 5, Maputo.

From April 15th 2014 to April 14th 2017

Mozambique, as other African countries, has to face the lack of sanitation that could guarantee appropriate sanitary conditions to the population. This project is characterized by a different approach on this particular problem: the aim is to provide slums with appropriate sanitation services, not only ditribuiting latrines to families, but also making a good use of the social entrepreneurs’ potential to the development of the country. The action connects supply and demand identifying on the one hand a fair price that allows poor people to buy toilettes, on the other hand stimulating the dissemination of small local businesses (for instance:activities of waste disposal, small enterprises that work with micro-finance. etc.)
The last challenge is to built, together with Italian and Mozambiquan Universities, biodigesters to verify on the field which could be the best solutions to produce biogas and fertilizers.

Overall objective:

  • Contribuite to the economic and environmental developmen, to the public healthcare of the intervention area and to improve the sustainability of the sanitation sector at a national level.

Specific objective:

  • The poorest population of the cities of Moamba, Ressano Garcia, Marracuene and of the peri-urban aera of Maputo benefit from an increase in the access to santitation services, through a productive and sustainable economic chain.

  • Market analysis: supply and demand analysis in sanitation sector.
  • Construction of the social enterprise Sani Loja.
  • Creation of a fund to finance micro enterpreneurial activities in sanitation sector.
  • Technical and managerial training of local craftsmen and enterpreneurs in the costruction and management of clean up systems.
  • Activation of a National round table of the actors of “sanitation business”.
  • Creation of a dialogue between local enterpreneurs and authorities in order to estabilish a institutional environment that could encourage the development enterpreneurial experiences.
  • Improvement of managerial models of sanitation sistem in the local context.
  • Installation of family latrines according to SANI-SHOP model where production and selling are granteed through :a production centre that has 14 subordinate points of sale  (220 enterpreneurs connected in franchising).
  • Realization of public sanitation systems in city areas.
  • Realization of public sanitation systems in schools and production of biogas to supply power to school kitchens and fertilize fields.
  • Installation of water treatment systems and production of biogas and fertilizers.
  • Campaigns to promote personal and environmental hygine in communities and schools.
  • Promotion and commercialization of sanitation systems (sanitation marketing).

Direct beneficiaries:

  • 103.800 user of family and collective sanitation products and services of Sani Loja.
  • A social enterprise active in clean up services sector (including its employees and their families).
  • 250 micro-enterpreneurs and local craftsmen (builders, manufacterers, distributors, artisans) and satellites (and their families) active or to incubate,  o da incubare, services providers on a small scale. di servizi su piccola scala.
  • 500 institutional officers (100 Nationals e 400 Locals).
  • 19.500 students, teachers and staff of 30 schools.

Indirect beneficiaries of the action are the 191.300 people living in different areas of the intervention.

The identified market solutions and the social enterprises supported as country economy incubator are levers on which financial sustainability lean, they are the heart of the project. Business models promoted by the Sani Loja social enterprise – tanks to a system of affordable rates for poorer families – guarantee the profitability of the enterprise itself and a constant market demand. Furthermore, the social enterprise will accompany the enterpreneurs during the process of access to credit, in the creation of lasting relationships whith the local financial institutions and will strenghten their technical and managerial skills in the perspective of a long term sustainability. Being part of the framework of national and regional programs established by the government of Mozambique, the project will have a constant and lasting dialogue with local institutions. Moreover, as an action of ecological sanitation, in this project all the environmental aspects are important; among others, the experimental production of biogas and fertilizers through the treatment of faeces.
