Improvement of the living conditions of children in 21 villages in the municipality of Nabha, in the Punjab State – India

WHERE

India
Punjab, District of Patiala, Municipality of Nabha

DURATION

From December 1, 2010 to June 30, 2013

CONTEXT

The main problems that afflict millions of children in India are prevalently connected to poverty, malnutrition and by the morbidity of certain diseases that could be eradicated through the distribution of vaccines. Furthermore, in the State of Punjab there is a literacy rate of 56.2% amongst the more vulnerable classes, a rate that increases when referred to girls. The project aims to improve the conditions of life of children of school age living in the municipality of Nabha, promoting, thanks to the collaboration of Intervita Onlus, a child sponsorship program in 21 schools in the rural areas through an integrated approach. The aim, in particular, is to offer children a better educational context, which is healthier, protected and able to respond to their educational requirements. Within this integrated approach more economic development opportunities will be created for both the families of the children involved in the project, and for other families thanks to the textile production and organic farming. Finally, in one of the villages involved, a water system will be built to supply drinking water.

SUSTAINABILITY

An extension of the initial duration established for the project was deemed necessary for prolonging and extending the impact of the activities carried out to date. The territorial rooting of the local partner (The Nhaba Foundation), the considerable advocacy and lobbying capacity at local and state level in Punjab, the prestige of many of its associates guarantee a direct access of the stakeholders both public and private who take part in the process of defining the public policies of the State. The project, in this sense, works as a laboratory for testing good practices in rural and village environments which, once systemized may be easily proposed to the interested actors for scaling up their application.
