In In many countries in the world 1 billion people still practice open air defecation (OAD). The lack of improved sanitation is a threat to the dignity and health of 2.4 billion people!
According to the United Nations, an adequate sanitation could save the lives of 1.5 million children each year.
Diarrhea is the second leading cause of death among children in developing countries, more deadly than AIDS, malaria and measles together.
is ACRA's campaign to protect children's health, fight disease and children mortality through the rehabilitation of safe and clean toilets in 4 schools in Maputo, Mozambique.
Our intervention of sanitary blocks’ rehabilitation is made in Kamubukwane Municipal District – 14 neighborhoods - (northern area of Maputo) where 293,998 people live.
Thanks to a project co-funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs dedicated to this problem, ACRA has already refurbished toilets in three schools, in 2 health centers, one public toilet and supported the start-up of a social enterprise, Naiss, which aims to offer quality latrines to the poorest part of Maputo’s population.

To break down prejudices, embarrassments and create awareness on this important issue, the United Nations has been promoting Worldwide the World Toilet Day. On November 19 thousands of people, promote various types of awareness-raising events.
In this context, in 2013 The Urgent Run is founded; it is a global mobilization event, organized by the World Toilet Organization and sponsored by the United Nations, which involve thousands of people around the world with various kinds of running events. A day dedicated to a particular issue, because, to run for a good cause - in this case - is very urgent.

In Italy, the coordination of all the events is done by ACRA that, for three years now, is organizing many small Urgent Runs that animate the streets of various cities in Italy: amateur running events, accessible, fun and open to all.
